Every year at this time I go to Models and buy about 20 packs (around  
$1 each) of toe warmers.
They fit nicely into your shoe on the outside of your socks. Above or  
below the toes based on user preference. I like on top of toes.
They last for 6 hours and keep my easily chilled toes nice and  
toasty. I also carry a spare in the tool bag in case of malfunctions  
during the ride.

They are throw away and not a renewable resource but you also don't  
have to worry about getting the wires tangled up in your drive train :-)

Sitting in front of the coal stove with some cool Lagers on a cold  
day also sounds good.
