Len,
Thanks, now I know how the 28% grade feels like.

Ed,
Awhile back I posted a file with the grade of the road. Overall it's avg.
grade is 7% for the 1.2 mile road, and that steep .2mile section avg. is 20%
with part of it at 25-28%.

Subject: [DVBC] Eichele Hill ride again
After all the talk about Eichele Hill (including even satellite photos) I
got curious, but unfortunately missed Doug's ride on Saturday due to
unfavorable weather, although they did the ride anyway. So on Sunday Oct 8,
2006 I left my home around 8 am determine to check myself what that
commotion around one Hill is all about.
>From Glen Mills where I live, the most direct route north toward Eichele is
all hills, so by the time I got to "The Hill" after biking for about 43
miles I already had few good climes in my lags. All that way I was quite
anxious in anticipation; how difficult that damn Hill really is. Unlike the
Saturday group I did not have a triple but with 27 in the back and 39 in
front I was fairly confident I should be able to make it.
After I made the right turn from Deep Creek Rd. into the Eichele Rd. there
was a slight drop to the small bridge than the rode stated to climb. At the
beginning it is a very gentle climb, than little more steep, but still
nothing to get excited about. I even started to wonder if this is all it
is, but before I realize I was pushing the pedals as hard as I could. I
have to admit this was a surprise, it is steep, probably the steepest climb
I was aver on. Now I started to wonder how long that steepest part is going
to be, I was almost out of gears but suddenly it was over. If the hill was
much longer at that grade, I probably would need a triple.
Now that I've done it I agree that the hill is very steep but as far as a
physical challenge it does not compare to 113 miles I did today with 7,794
ft of total climbing. The Eichele Hill is 1.17 miles long and it goes from
340 ft to 600 ft; the steepest part is only 0.2 miles long but climbs for
impressive 181 ft. Could I've done it with 23 in the back; probably not,
but the hill is all about gears. With the correct gears most of us should
be able to do it, especially with the triple, although it is not going to be
easy. Good job to the 6 of you who did that climb yesterday.
Maybe somebody can calculate the percentage of climbing; I temporarily
posted the profiles from today's ride in the DVDC gallery:
http://gallery.craftech.com/dvbc/Eichele/
The first picture Eichele1 is the profile of the whole ride, the Eichele2 is
the entire Eichele Rd. climb with all the sections, and the Eichele3 is the
steepest part.

Ed,
You should have called this morning to get a weather update. 6 people
arrived for the ride, there was no rain, a little chilly but very
comfortable. All 6 riders made it to the top although it is a very
difficult climb. Sorry we missed you; it would have been even more fun
had you been there with camera attached.
By the way, all of today's rider's had triples.
Doug

I really wanted to see it (the Eichele Hill) for myself and was planning
to
go on Doug's ride but the weather is not looking very appealing to me
today
(drizzle and wind). I guess I will do a different ride from home later
on.
Instead I decided to do the Eichele Rd ride tomorrow on Sunday 10/8. I
plotted a course from my home to the Eichele and the ride will be about
45
miles long each way. Unfortunately the course bypasses Doug's house. If
anybody would be interested to join me, please send me en email, I will
send
you directions to my home. The starting time is negotiable (7-9 am).
