Drew,
Sounds like it was a great ride. We should definitely try to get a
group together to go up next year. How long did it take to get there?
It seems kinda far.
By the way. I ran over a big black snake on the Salem Oak ride Saturday
before we met up with you. What are the chances than it lived to slink
away? The last time I saw it from a distance it was all coiled up.
Maybe it just has a sore tail.
Debbie

Subject: [DVBC] Covered Bridges Ride Review
It may be quite a bit less challenging than the Savage, but I
would rate today's Covered Bridges Ride as easily the best ride I've
been on in the last two years, well, maybe ever. There's no
tear-your-legs-off century but rather mellow climbs on intermediate
routes ranging from 20- to 63-miles. The roads and scenery were
terrific.
Although there were approximately 2500 riders, aside from
filling a very big field with cars, it didn't feel overwhelming and the
facilities were not swamped. It took me maybe 40 seconds to register
once I found my way there. Everything ran like clockwork.
The cue sheets were cheerfully distributed (as opposed to when I
nearly got in a fight at a $35 Princeton ride for taking two different
length cues). Each route was printed on a different color paper and
route markers used the same color. I'm looking at my cue sheets now for
the first time because the routes were extremely well painted. Some
turns has an many as six arrows.
There was a good mix of hardened roadies whipping up the pace
and smelling-the-flowers strollers. A minor complaint is that slower
riders tend to ride side-by-side in the middle of the road, which makes
it tough to decide on which side to pass.
Other details: the food stops were frequent and well stocked
with 3 rest stops on both the 50 and 63. The start/stop area also served
coffee, hot chocolate and cider throughout the day and lunches after the
ride. Dom, there were lots of picnic benches for milling around.
Put this tour on next year's calendar.
