Parking isn't hard to find in Philadelphia on Sunday for the start of the ride, since it's early in the AM. People from the team are put in touch with each other by the team's captain in case people want to caravan cars down the night before. There's also a team dinner the night before, team jerseys available and a special tent set aside for team members at the ride finish. It's a well-organized group and effort.

BCP carpools to Mays Landing. The club members leave their cars at Lenape Park and drive back to Philadelphia in one or two mini-vans. However, the BCP members have to bike across the city at 6AM to get to the Ben Franklin Bridge to start the ride.
The charter takes care of the logistics for getting to the start and for returning without the problems of $$$$$ parking in center city Philadelphia.

Re: the ACS ride, I recruited Bob and several other DVBC members to join the team I ride with for that ride every year. It's the Penn Abramson Cancer Center team, and Bob was a patient in the center at least once. It was such a treat for the team and our captain, Pat Remeis (who works at the Center), to have Bob go from patient to survivor/team rider. Rather than dilute the effort, how about bringing more DVBC members to that already well-established team, which has several DVBC members already on it? Pat is a great team captain and she's always up for ways to bring more people to the team. Since Bob was already a team member, how about contacting her and asking her about establishing some kind of fundraising initiative especially in Bob's name?

Here's a neat way to organize a bike's club participation in the ACS ride.
I used to do the ride with the Northeast Roadrunners Chain Gang. The running club chartered a tour bus and left at 5:30 AM from Northeast Philly. When the group reorganized and started the ride at 5:30 from Bucks County, I dropped out because Bucks County was too far away for so early in the morning.
If DVBC plans the event, we could all depart from a common place, such as behind the Staples in Springfield. We'd meet there at 5 AM and load the bikes into a chartered tour bus. We then ride the bus to the Ben Franklin Bridge arriving at 6:30 A.M. The ride starts at 7. The bus goes to Mays Landing, and picks us up at 3:30 PM for the return ride to Springfield, PA. The tour bus could hold 30 participants, and the charter would cost each participant approximately $35, given the inflated price of fuel during the summer months. The club then turns over any cash remaining from the bus charter to the ACS.

That's a great idea, Len. I told Dom last night that I think it would be wonderful if we got a bunch of DVBCers to ride the ACS ride next July in Bob's honor. We could all wear our club jerseys.

Theres not a ride that goes by where he is not in my thoughts. I was so excited riding with him again after his comeback from the first bout with this deadly disease. He gave a lot to DVBC and the charity rides he participated in. I think we should have a yearly memorial ride on the last week of September and collect donations for the American Cancer Society in honor of him. He will truly be missed. Len
