Doug - there are a lot of hotel/motels around Newark airport.  In the
morning you can jump on I-78 east which is the turnpike extension that runs
straight to the Holland Tunnel

Where are you going in Manhattan? I know it pretty well.
If you are going near the Central Park Area and would be talking the 
Lincoln Tunnel, you can stay in Secaucus, NJ. It's 10 minutes from 
Manhattan and there are a bunch of very inexpensive hotels.
