Would like to give everyone a heads up when traveling over to the picnic. I
received emails from WCBC informing of the tar and chip being added to many
roads in Chester County. I’ve been experiencing this lately. And it’s been
very annoying when traveling some of my favorite roads that are now
dangerous when this process is first applied. I urge CAUTION when you
encounter one of these roads. When first applied there is much loose gravel
and is very scary when doing a descent.
Below are excerpts from their emails and the first gives reasoning and
background for what was suppose to happen.
Happy cycling,
Len
Background email:
Anyone have recollection of the Chester County Roads that are being tarred
and chipped? Our Chester County Committee is looking into the issue. Also if
you come across more this weekend let us know, we want to compile a list for
PENNDOT.

Please send me the specific locations of the "dismay", to determine if it is
a PennDOT or local road.
We (Lee Whitmore from Chester Co & I) met with Chester Co PennDOT
maintenance last December. What was discussed / agreed:
* They have to do chip and seal to extend the life of selected rural
roads, due to budget constraints. Paving is significantly more expensive.
* We mentioned using finer gravel. They though it was already being
used, but would check into that.
* We also requested sweping up after. They would sweep up the
post-sealing loose gravel sooner than normal on roads we indicated were
bicyclist-important-.
* They would put the planned maintenance for the season on the web.
(Im not sure of this status)
* Finally, we reminded them of, and gave them a map of the Chester
County Bicycling Network, which shows the county bicycling routes.
Again, let me know the effected roads.

Two emails sent by members:
The weekly Wednesday morning ride encountered numerous "tar and chip" roads
today. Camp Linden is a mess.... Brandywine Drive is very, very bad...
and they were in the process of tar and chipping Rt 842 starting at the
Bridge by Creek Rd going back toward West Chester as we were riding back
into town. Not sure how far back into West Chester they are going. Other
than that, 3 flats and derailleur problem the ride was great with 14 riders
showing up.
Also Warpath and Groundhog College Roads have been tarred and chipped, and
Red Lion, and Unionville-Lenape Rd.
