[DVBC] Breakfast on the Brandywine

Well, since everyone else is chiming in, I will too.  Never did any long distance riding until November 1999, but when I did, I was hooked.  However, I did some 5 - 10 mile rides on my 1974 lime green Fuji 10 speed.  I bought it instead of getting married which looking back was the right choice.  I actually used to ride on Creek Rd by Cheyney and out in Paoli so it's kind of ironic that I'm back on those same roads again.  I still have that bike in my garage and I plan on getting Bob Martin to fix it up so I can ride it around town.  The frame still looks great since it always has been kept in my basement or my garage.  It weighs a ton though.  My bike before that was a used one speed big fat tire bike I used to ride around the neighborhood.  It's funny how things change but also stay the same.

	I used to bang around on a twelve speed Panasonic R-1000 back in the late seventies. Including my first ride to the shore (LBI) in the early eighties with a group of nine (102F on the island). It had steel rims, frame, and crank with only a quick release on the front wheel. Before that it was an old Pep Boys (yes they used to sell bicycles) ten speed with wing nuts on the front wheel (the original quick release). $49.99 and off you went. I remember how we all thought is was criminal when they raised the price to $59.99. Though many back then were actually riding Schwinn Varsity's. I guess I was the odd ball on the Pep Boys bike. Though the Panasonic was considered a plus. Anyway the Pep Boys bike was a throw back to my mid teens that unfortunately didn't see much action during my later teens. And for that real question that you forgot to ask???? Did anyone wear a helmet back then. Yes I wore one of those Bell(R) half Moon shaped helmets back in the late seventies. It might have been called a Bell(R) Biker, or was that model after it?? I must have been quite a sight in that helmet, for that I'm certain.

		Good morning Everyone,
		 
		It's less than two weeks until the 31st Brandywine Tour and so we start the 2007 version of Breakfast on the Brandywine. First, let me say that the volunteer response has been terrific so far but we could still use a few more folks. Call or write our Volunteer Captain, Bob LaDrew, if you are available or if you know where to find some warm bodies. 
		 
		And please, please, don't be a FedEX Pedrix, who frequently says he will show up at rides but doesn't. One FX in a club is more than enough.
		 
		So this is what thirty-one feels like. Who else in the club was riding bikes in 1976 besides me and Charlie? By this date 31 years ago, I'd just finished a 2,800 mile, fully-loaded tour. 
		 
		Just to put into perspective the longevity of our long-running tour, let's turn the clock back to when the US was celebrating its bicentennial...
		 

		*	Gerald Ford was president of the US 
		*	The Concorde began flights from New York to Europe 
		*	George W. Bush was arrested and fined for driving under the influence of alcohol 
		*	Cray-1, the first commercially-developed supercomputer, was invented by Seymour Cray 
		*	Cincinnati Reds Big Red Machine won the World Series; the Pittsburgh Steelers won Superbowl X; and the 
			Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup 
		*	The top-grossing film and Academy Award winner was Rocky beating out All The President's Men, Network, while overlooking Lina Wertmuller's Seven Beauties and Fellini's Casanova 
		*	George Lucas began filming Star Wars 
		*	Rod Stewart's "Tonight's The Night" spends the most time at the top of the US chart 
		*	The Eagles "Greatest Hits" goes platinum (29 times) 
		*	Charlie's Angels and The Muppet Show premiere 

		Ah well, maybe in another 31 years we'll look back fondly at reality tv, rap music and Paris Hilton.
