[DVBC] Ride Report

Sorry I missed the KK ride this am -- too early for me and I wanted to wait
until it got REALLY WARM, so I left Media at noon and headed out for 33
miles around Westtown and back.

News to Report:

1. I sighted the Mad Russian twice, chugging as usual in high gear, going
for the hardest hills he could find. I was surprised to see him wearing a
shirt on a day like this. Maybe he was afraid of getting a sunburn.

2. The bridge near 926 on Westtown-Thornbury Road (the right turn at the top
of the Dilworthtown climb) which has been closed for years, is now almost
rebuilt. I was told by a workmen today, as I trudged through the mud to
cross the construction sight, that it should be finished by the end of this
month. So we will soon have another option for riding out there.

3. The wind was strong today, as those of you who rode in Jersey must have
been very aware. It didn't help that I also broke a spoke and had the brake
pad rubbing most of the ride. Other than a few weekend rides, my exercise
recently has consisted mostly of walking downstairs to the Christmas cookie
stash, so I was worn out by the time I turned back towards home near
Westtown. Then, of course, with the wind at my back I felt as if I was
sailing along. I'm curious if Drew completed his century, and if he managed
to find a 100 miles that kept the wind at his back the whole way.

4. I saw lots of other riders out today, as amazed by the weather as I was.
In Ridley Creek State Park, there seemed to be about 5000 creatures (4000
humans, 1000 dogs) and about a zillion little kids on bicycles out enjoying
the day as well. At the top of the park road, where the only option to get
around the gate is to either open it or ride through the muck, I braved the
muck but forgot to free one foot and managed to fall over into a patch of
wild roses. So besides the people and trikes and dogs, I had the added
distraction while riding through the park of picking rose thorns out of my
side.

For those worried about me, I have a nasty scrape at my waist and about 20
superficial wounds from the thorns, but they should heal up nicely.

For those worried about my Colnago (the majority of you, I'm afraid) it
seemed to come through the mishap unscathed. Somehow, in all my slow-motion
falls, I manage to hit the ground first, softening the fall for the bike,
which I suppose is as it should be.
