That's a freaky story. Makes you wonder if we should carry a small
amount of alcohol with us on rides.

This happened on the ride Bonnie and I did on Saturday. Like to
share this, if this ever happens to you on a ride. This is definitely
an unusual happening. It's sounds funny when you first hear, but then
you start to wonder. Now I have another reason to ride with my MP3
player.
Happy cycling,
Len

Dolly, thank you for another wonderful ride. We appreciate the
time you give to manage and lead great rides.
Hey you guys, I'm the guy who got the bug in the ear. Here's
what happened.
At about mile 60 a beetle or June bug flew up, hit me in the
face and bounced around to my ear. When I tried to brush it off, it
crawled into my ear canal. Andrea and Dave Bier pulled over but by the
time they looked into my ear it was already deep in the canal and not
visible. We tried to wash it out with water, but then it started to
bite and scratch (which hurts to say the least). I tried to ride back
to my car, but my ear started bleeding and it hurt like a mo.
An ambulance took me to Virtua Hospital where three nurses held
me down while the doctor froze the bug, then tried to pull it out,
irrigate it out and finally suck it out. They could not remove it and
sent me home with an appointment for an ear, nose and throat doctor for
Monday. At this point I was comfortable because the bug was dead and
not biting.
After arriving at home, my wife took me to the University of
Penn where they have an ear, nose and throat guy in house all the time.
After an hour of picking and poking they got it out. To sedate the ear
canal and drum they gave me medication that had me throwing up for five
hours. I was so off balance that I couldn't stand up until 11:00 pm.
The worse part was clearly when the beetle was alive and
biting. Apparently the first line of defense is rubbing alcohol.
Rubbing alcohol in the ear will quickly kill a bug.
Thank you to Andrea and Dave for taking care of me and see you
on the next ride.
