Len,
I understand what you're saying about leading rides. In my experience
(which isn't as much as yours or many others that lead rides), I do get
frustrated. I post it at one level and much faster riders show and they
get upset at the slower riders. Then the slower riders get upset. I
try to please everyone and I get upset. It's not easy.
Then of course I have scheduling problems. I try to schedule rides that
fit into my schedule and at the same time won't conflict with other
rides on the schedule since I know that I won't be able to compete with
say either a KK or a Manayunk ride.
As far as which rides I ride, I choose them based on what my schedule
is. Sometimes I can commit an entire day to the bike, but many times I
cannot and that's why I don't do a lot of the rides that are posted.
This is also the reason why I started doing rides out of Aston so I
don't have to add traveling time to the riding time.
I agree with you that DVBC's ride calendar has been on the light side of
late and that it would be nice if some other people would list a ride.
There are a lot of riders out there that have been riding for years and
know a lot of routes but who have never led a ride. Maybe they are
intimated about it. I know I was but once you do one, it gets your feet
wet and it's not so bad.
Anyway, I hope you continue to list rides since I know a lot of people
like them. It's a shame that you cancelled the Ludwig's Bakery ride for
Sunday since that's the only ride on the list besides Brian Wade's ride.
If you decide to do that on your own with Bonnie, let me know since I'd
like to do the ride with you since it definitely fits into my schedule
this week.
See you out there!
Debbie

I just read my last email and it's pretty funny. First I'm
saying how frustrating it is to be a ride leader, then asking members to
step up and be a ride leader. Oh well. Houston we have a problem.

Subject: Ride Cancelled
My Sunday ride to Ludwig's Village is cancelled.
I just need to vent and if you don't want to read further just
delete and move on. This has been a very frustrating year for me as a
ride leader. Members aren't interested for whatever reason, but it's
not worth my time to develop these rides with little or no
participation. This weekend was the icing on the cake, but was typical.
My Saturday ride had four riders (all new to me). The weather was
excellent (mild temps, no wind, bright sun), the route (Brandywine
Valley in my mind the best area to ride), the rest stop (Northbrook: is
there a better rest stop?). And only four riders? Then I go over to
Bob Martin's KK ride and thirty riders? It is obvious to me members
just aren't interested in my rides. I only started leading rides to
pick up the slack when Bob Leon wasn't able to any longer. Initially, I
didn't want to but found I enjoyed this aspect.
Isn't the main function of a bike club to have rides for club
members to participate in? Our ride calendars are pathetic. As a
concerned member I would like to know what do members want as far as
rides (area, moving average, terrain) and then find members who would
lead them? We need more riders to step up and lead rides. If only a
quarter of the members would lead one ride a month on the weekends, just
think of all the rides we would have to choose from. I'm sure everyone
has a favorite route they do. Just put it in the ride calendar and have
other club members enjoy it with you. Does it get any better?
Happy cycling,
Len
