David,

I'd like to hit the trail sometime. Since it's not marked in Lewes,
where and how exactly can I find it?

By the way, we rode Route 1 from Lewes down to Dover where we took Route
9. The portion of route 1 we were on wasn't bad at all. Very large
shoulder for most of the ride (about 30 miles give or take).

Deb

I rode the brand new Junction Breakwater Trail that
connects Lewes to Rehoboth two weeks ago and found it to be excellent.
Its pluses are:

It is very scenic. Tucked between the sprawl on De. rt
1, and Henlopen State Park, you only see the marsh area as it must have
looked before the development in the area. The only buildings I saw was
one old farm house surrounded by fields of corn. It crosses the canal
connecting Delaware Bay to Rehoboth Bay where I saw lots of turtles and
fish. The trail is laid out between open fields and is totally
sheltered by trees which provide relief from the wind and sun. The
surface is crushed stone on which I had no trouble riding my fully
loaded touring bike with 28C tires. There is an access from the ocean
side Tanger Outlet where you can park and combine shopping with riding
if you want.

The minuses are that there are no signs indicating where
it begins from the Lewes side. It is not paved for those who prefer
paving but crushed stone is better for stormwater management anyway.

I also did some riding on Rt. 1 for the first time in my
life and found it to be the most dangerous road I've ever ridden on
where cycling was not prohibited. So many driveway cuts and right
turning traffic, and insane curbing and drain configuriation which
forces the rider away from the curb, combined with inconsistant bike
lanes that are also bus lanes and right turn lanes, make the
conscientious rider spending more time looking back than looking
forward. Rt one is a textbook case of how not to design a highway in a
commercial shopping district. The Junction Breakwater Trail should be
considered a textbook case of how to design a trail for safety as well
aesthetics.
