There is a way to get a few bigger gears on a compact crankset. If you go with a long cage rear derailleur you can use a little larger cogs in the back for the lowest gears, for climbing. Paul just did this on his new bike. Haven't really had a chance to test it, but others I know have done this successfully.

I'm trying to decide if a compact crank set would be the way to go if I
get a new bike. Is anyone out there using one and how do you like it?
I've got a triple on my current bike and hardly ever use the big or the
little gear, although there was a hill or two last year that I did break
down and use the granny. My inquiring mind would like to know. Thanks.
