[DVBC] compact crank questions

1) It sounds like you may have a front derailleur with a 14 tooth throw (53-39 =14). Since the compact will probably be 34/50 you may need to change the front derailleur since it probably will not handle a 16 tooth throw (50-34=16).
2) The rear derailleur size has to do with the amount of chain slack it handles. If you have a short derailleur now and will be going to a larger cassette range then you will need one with a longer arm to handle the extra chain spread.
Also if you go with the compact and do not change the current cassette then expect to remove a few chain links. Well at least that is how I see it from the information provided.
