[DVBC] compact crank questions

Hey Eric,

What Frank says is generally true *but* I'm happily running a Campy Chorus
10-speed with a small-cage rear derailleur, a 26-tooth freewheel and an
FSA 50-34 compact crank. I thought I would at least need to swap up to a
middle-length cage (point your browser to Branford Bikes
http://www.branfordbike.com/cgi-bin/perlshop/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=push&thispage=hub/hub07.html&ORDER_ID=182446585
to
read how to swap Campy cages) but Luke kept insisting the small cage would
work. However, the regular Campy front der shifted erratically going down
onto the small chainring. It felt like the chain was being dropped instead
of pushed and would frequently derail. When the Campy compact front der
arrived, it shifted smoothly and consistently.

If you feel like you could use two or three easier gears in the hills, the
compact is a great way to go. I found the easier gears helped my knees and
were less tiring than muscling. I also found buying compacts easier than
losing 10 lbs.
