[DVBC] Thurs evening ride

During the board meeting Monday night we discussed this issue. I told
the board that I also have some reservations with continuing to lead
rides if, as Dom had stated previously on the list serve, that I could
be held personally liable as a ride leader. Dom told us that he
mis-spoke and plans on sending out another message to clear things up.
Unfortunately, with the times we live in, lawsuits are rampant for
things that should never hit the courts. One could blame the courts for
even allowing certain lawsuits be filed--why don't the judges throw them
out? It seems people don't take personal responsibility for anything.
There's always someone else to blame--parents, the government, the rich
kids (VA Tech), and sometimes even their bike club. It sucks, but it
happens all the time.

Len,
I see what your concern is and I agree that leading rides with
fellow riders is one goal of a bike club. I assume the board will look
into these concerns and maybe contact an attorney about the legalities
of running a bike club while protecting its members and the club. Maybe
the DVBC insurance policy needs to be reviewed and modified to include
covering ride leaders, after all isn't that one of the reasons why we
joined a club and pay dews? I would think using DVBC money to protect
DVBC ride leaders and the club would be a higher priority then donating
DVBC money to other causes.
We all share the same desire to ride our bicycles with our
friends and promote bicycling as a safe and fun form of exercise and
transportation.

I understand your statements and agree.
The reason I'm posting this way is two fold.
1. DVBC club president has stated: signing a waiver
releases the club from liability, but not the ride leader. The club
wants us to lead rides, but doesn't want to back us up? This shouldn't
have bothered me but it did.
2. More importantly, I post my rides with other bike clubs
and each has it's own interpretation of rides listed on their list
server. I want to lead rides w/o the waiver sheet. As long as the club
will allow me to do so. Some clubs you don't need to be a member in
order to post on their list servers. Not sure where DVBC stands on
this, but I guess I'll find out.
Each bike club has it's BS. One club: I can't post because I
have to attend a bike leader seminar ride first. Another wants us to
keep track and police riders who come on club rides and list as a non
member. Non members can only ride on one ride and then have to become a
member.
I just want to lead rides that other cyclists may enjoy to ride
a route and share company with other cyclists. I apologize, if I have
offended anyone. Just tried of the bike club bs.
Happy cycling,
Len
