Heres the text from my original message. Where does it say that ride waivers release the club from liability but not ride leaders?
Non-members leading club rides? Generally not a good idea.
The DVBC is insured under a program sponsored by the League of American Bicyclsts and issued by American Specialty Insurance. The policy protects active members of the DVBC and provides for minimal medical insurance benefits for a rider, member or non-member, who is injured during a club ride. A non-member leading a club ride would not be protected under the club's policy. He/she runs the risk of bearing responsibility for medical costs and legal fees if someone is injured on a ride. The club could also face exposure to a lawsuit by the injured cyclist to recover medical costs and have to pay out-of-pocket to defend itself because they could not file an insurance claim for a non-member.
Just another of many reasons to formally join a bike club. Dom
The phrase "He/she runs the risk of bearing responsibility" above refers to a non-member - maybe that's what started the whole issue.
Our insurance policy DOES provide protection for club members who lead club rides. Thats why we spend hundreds of dollars each year to purchase it. The policy DOES NOT provide protection for non-club members who want to lead club rides (the topic of the original message that started this thread).
Regarding the listing of ad hoc rides, the Board discussed the matter at Monday nights meeting. During the discussion I suggested one option, that club members could harvest friends email addresses from the list-serve and use their personal email service to invite them, off-list, to a ride.
The Board should come to a conclusion at the June meeting. Please, any feedback from club members would be appreciated. Thanks.
Dom
