Seems like common sense to me.  But, I think anything listed on the site (ad-hoc or not) could be construed as a club ride, and therefore bringing that ride leader into/under the club's insurance "protection".
 
Maybe we should take some club money and buy all ride leaders a shirt that says: 
"I'm not liable for your dumb *ss!"
If you're not a member, you can't get the shirt for the rides you lead.  If you're ride isn't listed, you shouldn't wear the shirt.  That should make it pretty clear.  Yeah, I'm kidding...a bit. :)
 
That said, when I was rowing/sculling competitively, they always had us signing waivers for this or that.  But everybody knew it didn't matter.  If some half-wit was to hurt/kill (yeah people have died) him or herself, it really came down to the character/integrity of the injured person, or the deceased's family.  If they're gonna sue, they're gonna sue...and usually win against the club, but not down to the coach (ride leader).

The phrase "He/she runs the risk of bearing responsibility" above refers to a non-member - maybe that's what started the whole issue.
 
Our insurance policy DOES provide protection for club members who lead club rides.  That’s why we spend hundreds of dollars each year to purchase it.  The policy DOES NOT provide protection for non-club members who want to lead club rides (the topic of the original message that started this thread).
 
Regarding the listing of ad hoc rides, the Board discussed the matter at Monday night’s meeting.  During the discussion I suggested one option, that club members could “harvest” friends’ email addresses from the list-serve and use their personal email service to invite them, off-list, to a ride.  
 
The Board should come to a conclusion at the June meeting.  Please, any feedback from club members would be appreciated.  Thanks.
