    It is my understanding that utilities make the highest profit in neighborhoods where they can install their product most easily and cheaply. Verizon must have spent thousands to install FIOS in my house. When I commented to the service man that it would be decades before they turn a profit on me he replied that that is true but where they will really make money is in (poor) Coatesville, where they just have to run the lines a few feet and houses are close together.

  The whole point of Dom's original posting was that Verizon is only making FIOS available to affluent communities at present.  I agree with Dom that their marketing plan is not designed to serve everybody, just the rich who live in rich areas.  I live in Lansdowne and I am not poor but I don't expect FIOS or even DSL to be available to me until Hell freezes over.
