I had DSL when I lived in Lansdowne. Is it just that side of Baltimore Avenue that's technologically challenged?

The whole point of Dom's original posting was that Verizon is only making FIOS available to affluent communities at present. I posted a message, accidently, which was out of context because I wanted to send it to Dom directly off the list because the subject is not about cycling. There has been enough postings since then that I should explain that in my neighborhood, DSL as well as FIOS is not available yet. In my experience, I have found Verizon to be the WORST utility for service. They never show up when you make an appt. and when they do show up. its always unanounced.
I agree with Dom that their marketing plan is not designed to serve everybody, just the rich who live in rich areas. I live in Lansdowne and I am not poor but I don't expect FIOS or even DSL to be available to me until Hell freezes over. Because RCN is losing money consistently, I think My only option is Comcast for broadband. Thank you Eric for your candid advice. I appreciate all the comments about skiping Digital service and getting HD over the air. High tech always sucks, at least at first. I am hopelessly addicted to watching TV...especially Public tv and the Hitler Channel.

When Jo Ann and I looked at this townhome, we saw crews installing orange plastic pipe into the ground near Brookhaven Road, so we hoped FiOS was on the way.
Then the Verizon installation tech explained that because we were part of the hub that originated in Chester, Wallingford would be one of the last areas to get FiOS. Had something to do with local delinquent payments, or so he said. He also explained that we're located over 18,000 feet from the Chester hub, and given that our telelphone wires are over 20 years old, it's pretty hard to get the 1.5 Mbps we're paying for. Last night measured 24 Kbps download rate and 124 Kbps upload. And I thought my old dial-up line in Swarthmore was slow!
Just another example where companies are allowed to monopolize the marketplace and consumer choice is limited. If you know of other ISP options, I'd be glad to hear them. Thanks!
Dom
