Some might think we were crazy, but Dan, Jim Irwin, Nancy, Mary "Rookie of
the Year" and I braved the cold for my birthday ride. The temp was probably
only 28 or 29 when we headed out of Chadds Ford Elementary towards Kennett
Square. However, it really didn't feel that bad. I was bundled up
appropriately but not overly much and had on my balaclava so most of my face
was covered. The bridge of my nose was cold the first few miles but then
that wore off. The others were mentioning the same thing about their face
being a little cold. We headed out towards the Country Butcher and were
only about 2-3 miles away when Jim got a flat. Mary, Nancy and I watched
Jim and Dan change the tire. We were stopped across the street from a place
that sells fertilizer and you should have seen all the steam coming up from
the piles. The odor right before we left got really strong. We were glad
to be on our way but just before we left Nancy had a little mishap with her
bike but there didn't seem to be a problem with it. At the Country Butcher
we had some great chilli and soup that definitely hit the spot. Then back
on the road. Just a little past where Jim had his flat, Nancy's bike froze
up and we saw that the rear derailuer was rubbing against a spoke. After a
little messing around with it Dan and Jim were able to make her bike a fixed
gear. So we were off again and Nancy did a great job getting back to Chadds
Ford via Hillendale Rd. For those of you not familar with it, that road is
the most direct back to Chadds Ford but pretty hilly. Total miles 29.7.
Back at the school we all had a piece of chocolate bike birthday cake that
Dan brought along. There was a bike on it the exact color my bike! NICE!
Well, that's my greasy, grimy, happy, birthday story and I'm sticking to
it! See ya out for another great year of cycling. It's great to have
friends to celebrate life with!
