[DVBC] Recharging

Frank,

I looked into solar panels to keep my boat batteries charged when I wasn't
plugged into shore power and found them to be a better myth then
practicable. Not to mention what the manufacture and disposal of the panels
do to the planet's fragile environment. There are many hazardous chemicals
used in solar panels and the devastating mining techniques used to obtain
the materials isn't worth the benefits. A bicycle generator produces 5 VAC
and does not produce enough current to charge anything.

I may just choose Dave's option and gust bring my friendly personality,
extreme good looks and an extra pair of reading glasses with meJ

Doug
I'd look at the solar options first. Hand cranking could take longer than
you think and the devise could be heavy. It'd have to be something on the
lines of a smaller version megger. Another idea if you can get the voltage
right and control surge potential would the old style bicycle light
generator. Though I'd keep it easily off/on accessable. Because of the drag
it might prove too burdensome on climbs and maybe even flats. A fourth
undeveloped though wasteful and somewhat costly option would be to series
enough radio batteries to beable to transform down as a charger. Use your
auto charge on the phone to stay DC and use a small transformer to obtain 12
volts. You'd probably have to series in some diodes to keep the current form
backflowing when the batteries get low.
Happy hunting;
Frank

Subject: [DVBC] Recharging

All,

A few DVBC riders are going to Ride GOBA and camp all week. I am trying to
come up with a way to recharge our cell phones and GPS devices at night time
while sleeping in a tent. There will not be any access to household
electric power except while at restaurants. Does anyone have any ideas as
to how to keep cell phones and GPS units charged? I have a few ideas but I
am looking for more.

Thank You, Doug
