It looks like most of us spend considerable time on the bike this past
Memorial Day weekend. Woody, Mel and I left of Friday morning to
Chestertown, MD for the 26th Annual Spring Fling sponsored by BBC. I had an
idea three years ago to actually bike down there from my house, and when I
shared that thought with Woody and Mel they enthusiastically decided to join
me.
After three years of doing this, we got the route to perfection with only
occasional heavier traffic but on the roads with wide shoulders. Most of
the time however, we see very little traffic on the very scenic side roads.
In addition this year the weather cooperated and the wind was just what you
could dream for. On the way down we had a North, North-West wind at 10-20
mph but only in two sections had to go against the head wind when we turned
West. On Saturday and Sunday the wind was still blowing from the North, but
on Monday morning it shifted to South, South-West at 10-15 mph, so just
imagine how good it felt to go all the way up with a constant tail wind.
We stayed at Washington Collage which fills up to capacity with all kind of
bikers from many surrounding states. The food is legendary, and there is a
lot going on in town that weekend besides biking (Chestertown Tea Party,
square dancing, yoga classes, parades, crafts to name the few) really good
time. In four days we managed to bike respectful 327 miles, avoided any
mechanical problems and returned safely home. We already recruited maybe
one or two more people for the next year ride directly from my house.
