Weight and Size Allowance: Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is
62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage. Effective
June 17, 2009, overweight items from 51 to 100 pounds and oversized items in
excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches (e.g.; surfboards, bicycles,
vaulting poles) will be accepted for a charge of $50 per item. Any item
weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped as Air Cargo. However,
Customers cannot use SWA Cargo unless classified as a Known Shipper as
defined by the TSA or TSA approved Indirect Air Carriers (IAC). For full
details about shipping cargo, visit swacargo.com <http://www.swacargo.com/>
.

How that holds up in practice: Some people report avoiding the bike case
surcharge by saying "bike parts" when asked what's in the case. My guess is
that this technique will only work if your case isn't oversized. I have the
Performance Cargo case (47 1/2 x 30 1/2 x 10 1/2 (inches)) which is well
over their 80-inch limit. The "bike parts" response didn't work for me as I
was charged the $50 (each way) surcharge. At PHL one can do curbside
check-in with a bike case at no additional charge over the $50 surcharge. No
one measured the case nor did they weigh it (estimated weight 60 lbs.).

At Denver the case was delivered to an oversize baggage area adjacent to the
regular baggage carousels. Check-in at Denver was the same as PHL. At PHL
the case came up with the regular baggage.

The $50 compares favorably to the $75 and later $80 on US Air (domestic and
Europe although they didn't charge me on the Barcelona-PHL leg in 2006) and
United.
